Caldwell College is a Catholic liberal arts college in Caldwell, which is a borough in northwestern Essex County, in the US state of New Jersey, about 16 miles outside of New York, with a population estimated at a number of more than 7000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. According to New Jersey Monthly magazine (2010), Caldwell is the 3rd best place to live in New Jersey.
Caldwell College was established in August, 1939, being founded by the Sisters of St. Dominic, and provides liberal arts education which promotes spiritual, intellectual and aesthetic growth. Currently, the college has an enrollment of more than 2000 students and offers various programs of study in the liberal arts and sciences areas, leading to the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science.
Caldwell's athletic teams are known as the Cougars, who compete in NCAA Divsion II, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), in various sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Their distinctive colors are red and gold.
Caldwell College's noteworthy alumni are: Arline Friscia, member of the New Jersey General Assembly, and Mary Jo Kopechne, who drowned while riding as a passenger in a car driven by the late U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy. The circumstances of her drowning death at Chappaquiddick Island remain controversial, with her death regarded as a major hindrance to the Presidential aspirations of Kennedy.
